Laser Scanning Building Elevations Produced for 40 Birmingham Tower Blocks
The development of high-rise, or tower buildings in Birmingham was most active during the post- war development phase of the 1960s. These towers are now either being demolished or renovated and in the latter instance require elevations produced for work being undertaken on them.
Central Alliance works closely with other companies within the RSK Group, and when geotechnical and engineering contractor CAN was required to undertake work on a number of tower blocks in Birmingham it turned to Central Alliance to produce the necessary building elevations.
Specifically, Central Alliance was required to laser scan the buildings and produce drawings that could be used on site during the proposed work that was to be subsequently carried out by CAN. This saw Central Alliance mobilise its survey personnel and equipment, scanning the various tower blocks with the acquired data transferred to its head office for post-processing and elevation drafting.
Advantages of Central Alliance’s Approach
Central Alliance was able to offer a complete one-stop package of services to the client, ensuring the tight timescale on the programme was strictly followed. Thanks to its dedicated team of multitasking and multidiscipline surveyors, the survey deliverables for the towers were completed and delivered to schedule.
Central Alliance has a vast amount of experience in delivery of a variety of survey services over the years, and the measured building survey has been a successful addition to these services. A high level of technical knowledge and experience, coupled with a dedicated team-approach that is driven by success, has always been key to high quality delivery.
In addition, Central Alliance fully embraces new technologies, recognising that implementing them into its workflow, alongside the experience of the team, can provide solutions to difficult tasks and/or bring efficiency gains. Technologies like 3D laser scanning, mobile mapping and powerful processing software are now an integral part of the company’s fleet and as a result Central Alliance is able to provide high accuracy surveys and results that projects and clients now demand.
A project of this scale was always going to generate several challenges, not least having to undertake work in the worst of the British weather in order to complete work to schedule.
In fact, the pressure to complete work on time, was a great motivator of work efficiencies and prompted succinct planning and focus that ensured all work was processed smoothly. The success of the project was also reflected in customer feedback, with the client awarding Central Alliance top marks across all aspects of the work, including the quality, clarity and presentation of any deliverables (reports, plans etc.); timely delivery of the service; courtesy of staff; the technical capability; professionalism and overall value for money. The company was also praised for its health and safety, environmental and overall performance on this project.
Central Alliance was able to provide the full package of survey deliverables requested by the client and manage them as a one-stop service with all processes handled in-house. The project also took the company a step closer to the Scan2BIM solution that the construction industry now demands.
